How to create suspense through camera movement:
1) Subtle Dolly
- characters move forward whilst camera move backwards
- camera moves slower than characters
- shows that characters have entered an unknown, potentially dangerous area
* could be used when the husband enters the kitchen for breakfast
2) Two things at once
- 2 different camera set ups ~ one follows protagonist while the other follows the antagonist
- Characters abruptly meet
- 2 different environments with the same length of shots makes what happens unexpected
* could be used when the wife is cooking breakfast and the husband is getting ready/sitting at the table.
3) Traces and clues
- character looking for something
- film from behind and then cut to POV ~ could cut to shot of characters face when item is found
- makes things hectic
* could be used when wife is cooking, she looks medication that will make the husband dozy
How to create suspense and tension like Alfred Hitchcock (Things i may include):
The sound of silence:
- music is just as important as the shots ~ what you don't hear is sometimes more powerful than what you do
- silence unnerves people
- when tension is at its peak music cuts in and amplifies terror
* always keep audience one step ahead of characters and make them suffer as much as possible.
* the more they wait, the better the release
Uncomfortable opening sequence:
- suspenseful music at the beginning
- eerie and jarring discordant noises
- Colour grade is of cool tones
